A Man Without A Country by Kurt Vonnegut

As a big fan of the Science Fiction genre I've read, and enjoyed, most of Vonnegut's books. I don't think most fit into the classic definition of Sci Fi but I digress. I recently read Vonnegut's A Man Without A Country and was thoroughly entertained.

At 146 small pages with big type, generous white space filled with witty and blunt writing this is a quick read. Vonnegut gives us a glimpse of his life and a large dose of his humanistic opinions.

Many of us know an older person, perhaps a relative, who is beyond caring about offending people with their opinion. They mean well, they want to pass a long the benefit of the knowledge they have accumulated over the years but they will not sugar coat what they say. Vonnegut has reached that point. This is clear in his brutal condemnation of the "C Students of Yale", ex-president Bush and cronies. He also makes a good case that the current drug war is bad, a case more fully supported by the venerable "Economist" magazine in this week's issue (week of March 7th-13th, 2009).

Humor is an effective way of making one's point. Even the reader disagrees he may chuckle and a thought is planted. This is a must read for die hard Vonnegut fans and a recommended read for humanists and those who are curious.
