Books

I love reading. When I read something entertaining or thought provoking I will add it to the list below. Clicking the title will bring you to my review.

Newly read titles get added to the top.

  • Secret Asset, Stella Rimington.
    • An ex-DG of MI5, Rimington lends authenticity to this must read spy novel.
  • Shark River, Randy Wayne White.
    • A light summer read gives a nice taste of the old Florida.
  • When the Nines Roll Over, David Benioff.
    • Poignant short stories that leave an impression. Highly recommended for any fan of short stories.
  • The 25'th Hour, David Benioff.
    • Dark humor livens up the gritty, ambiguous people and scenes that fill our hero's final day of freedom before an appointment with jail on a drugs charge.
  • O'Hara's Choice, Leon Uris.
    • A well crafted historical novel about the Marine Corp and two strong personalities.
  • Sudoku, Various.
    • Games, be they word or number, are fun and exercise your mind.
  • one flew over the cuckoo's nest, Ken Kesey.
    • An epic conflict between McMurphy and Nurse Ratched in an insane asylum leads to a pyrrhic victory. A true American classic, an absolute must read.
  • The Lost Symbol, Dan Brown.
    • A highly entertaining romp around Washington D.C. with hero Robert Langdon hunting for the lost symbol.
  • Influence: Science and Practice, Robert B. Cialdini, P.H.D.
    • An entertaining explanation of how people are influenced. Vital for both the shopper and the marketer.
  • The Catcher in the Rye, J.D. Salinger.
    • An alienated upper class youth gets kicked out of school.
  • Around The World In Eighty Days, Jules Verne.
    • A marvelous printing of this classic demonstrates beyond doubt that books printed on paper will live on for a very long time.
  • A Walk in the Woods, Bill Bryson.
    • A funny writer stimulates memories of my attempts to hike the Appalachian Trail.
  • The Things They Carried, Tim O'Brian.
    • A good story teller spins believable Vietnam War tales.
  • The Art of Simple Food, Alice Waters
    • This is the best cook book I've read so far. The creator of California Cuisine shares her contagious love of food.
  • How To Be A Winner At Chess, Fred Reinfeld & Chess Titans, Microsoft
    • Great game and book help me enjoy many hours playing the classic game of chess.
  • Game Over, Stephen Leeb, PhD
    • This doom and gloom book by a financial newsletter writer paints a bleak picture of our future economy. I think Leeb makes good points but exaggerates.
  • Water for Elephants, Sara Gruen
    • I highly recommend this charming novel.
  • CCNA Official Exam Certification Library, Wendell Odom
    • Two Text books with DVD and test exam certificate. Must have study materials if you plan on pursuing Cisco's ICND1, ICND2 or CCNA certificates on your own.
  • The Cisco Mind Share Game, Cisco
    • Software. If you are studying for a Cisco Certification (CCNA/CCENT) don't waste your money until the many errors are fixed.
  • The Far Shore of Time, Frederik Pohl
    • Read The Siege of Eternity instead. Far Shore is the last of a trilogy (the Eschaton Sequence.) Pohl has written many science fiction books of which I've read several.
  • 21 The Unfinished Voyage of Jack Aubrey, Patrick O'Brian
    • O'Brian did not finish this book before he passed away. Its three chapters leave you hanging. The opposing pages are facsimiles of the handwritten original work. Only for the die-hard O'Brian fan. Click the link above to learn how very much I loved the other 20 books.
  • A Man Without A Country, Kurt Vonnegut
    • Part autobiography, part opinion this is a quick, lighthearted book about some heavy subjects.
  • The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon
    • Chabon's best selling Pulitzers Prize winning novel is a very good, but not my favorite, read. Keep a dictionary by your reading chair.
  • Omnivore's Dilemma, Michael Pollan
    • Pollan's quest for good, responsible food leads him to learn about the food production industry and an alternative. A must read for anyone who wants to learn about the food industry or cares about our impact on the environment.
  • The Geography of Bliss, Eric Weiner
    • A self proclaimed grump travels the world looking for happy places. It is also an exploration into what makes people happy.
