The Aubrey & Maturin series by Patrick O'Brian

Master and Commander, the first Aubrey & Maturin book by Patrick O'Brian is exciting. It introduces the unforgettable characters of Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin. It does demand the reader learn some technical details of sailing war ships from around 1800. There are diagrams and drawings to help make it easier. Once you are past that hurdle you have thousands of pages of enjoyment ahead of you.

I was hooked. After reading Master and Commander I bought the 19 books I didn't yet have and went through them with very few breaks in between. Jack is a smart and daring captain while at sea but a bit of a bumbling dummy on shore. Stephen is a doctor, naturalist and spy. They get into adventures, daring battles and awkward situations. Great stuff!

The final book was put together from notes after O'Brian died and is truly unfinished. The left page is in type, the right is the handwritten source material. There are only 3 chapters so the story is truly unfinished.

I highly recommend everybody buy and read Master and Commander. If you get hooked, like I did, buy the next 19 in the series, (or the 5 fat volume boxed set below) and do try to read them in order. You can skip the final, unfinished book.

21 The Final Unfinished Voyage of Jack Aubrey read summer 3/09; above written 3/11/09. CW - Highly Recommended
