The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon
What does it take to win a Pulitzer Prize? Kavalier & Clay won one. It is interesting and well written. I enjoyed the language Chabon used. In fact I kept a dictionary at hand so I could look up words I didn't know of which there were quite a few.
A young Joe Kavalier escapes Nazi occupied Czechoslovakia and ends up in New York City with his cousin Sam Clay. They create a successful comic book during the golden age of comics. Chabon does a colorful job of depicting pre-WWII New York. The book follows our heroes through the height of their success which ended when Joe goes off to fight Nazis in WWII. Then we see them struggle separately for years finally to reunite in time for the story's ending which gives us hope for a happy future though Sam heads off to California alone.
I loved all comics when I was a young boy. I grew up in New York City. I love to read. There are loads of reasons why I should have read this book cover to cover as quickly as possible. I'm not exactly sure why I kept putting this book down to read other things. However the fact is I kept coming back to it and picking it up again. Even though I was disappointed by some of the twists I had to discover what happened to our heroes.
I will give Chabon another try. He wrote other bestselling novels and short stories. He is clearly an excellent writer. I recommend reading one of his novels. At the very least you will learn some new words, be mildly entertained and be able to say you read Chabon. On the other hand you may discover your new favorite author.
