The 25'th Hour by David Benioff

The first novel from David Benioff hooked me, I knew I would want to read more of his books. The 25'th hour is when Monty is supposed to show up in jail. He was a drug dealer in New York and somebody snitched on him. This novel describes his final day of freedom.

The setting is Manhattan. The characters seemed realistic. I grew up in New York and found myself remembering the gritty streets and the green of Central Park. Monty's friends appeared to be good at heart but could one of them be the snitch?

The selling of drugs was just a job. Monty's dad didn't really approve but he didn't make a stink about it or anything. In fact he borrowed some of the profits to help him keep his bar running through a tight spot. I found the gray ambiguity of the stories, personalities and scenes fit my memories of the city very well. Life can be pointless, it can be funny. It is worth living.
